In 2012, CAMRI Director Dr. Jacques Ravel published a landmark study, which determined that the dominance of Lactobacillus crispatus characterizes the most stable and optimal vaginal microbiome. Everyday factors, including menstruation, sexual activity, contraceptives, stress, and cleansers, cause the depletion of L. crispatus, leading to dysbiosis and gynecological issues.
Despite this research, there have been no consumer innovations. Dr. Jacques Ravel told Seed Health that “Over more than two decades of research, we have elucidated the critical role of Lactobacillus crispatus in maintaining a protective and stable vaginal microbiome and identified specific strains that are particularly effective at promoting vaginal health.”
Last year at the 2024 Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology (IDSOG) Annual Meeting, Seed Health presented the research behind VS-01™. Dr. Ravel, the lead scientist, explained that “VS-01™ was formulated using a consortia design with three proprietary strains of L. crispatus to successfully establish an L. crispatus-dominant vaginal microbiome, marking a significant milestone in the field and advancement for women’s health.”
VS-01™ has highlighted the success of proactive, preventative care on the vaginal microbiome. Just last month, the data from the clinical trial became available to the public.
